The Black Arts District Project

The Black Arts District Project seeks to restore a main thoroughfare of historic West Baltimore by creating a Black Arts and Entertainment District on Pennsylvania Avenue. This will jump-start economic development in a way that will not lead to displacement and gentrification,

Pennsylvania Avenue has a rich history of arts and culture and was once lauded as the epicenter of Black Baltimore; famous for its numerous night clubs and performance theaters that featured many of the great jazz, comedy, and Civil Rights legends. As a result, folks in Baltimore have been attempting to obtain this formal designation for decades. Currently, there is only one other explicitly designated Black Arts and Entertainment District in the United States, located in Oakland, California.
