MOM Cares is designed to offer postpartum doula support to low-income, single women of color with a NICU experience in Baltimore City. New moms with babies in NICU have different needs; MOM Cares will provide advocacy, support, and education, facilitating family team meetings to offer updates on their baby's progress, provide self-care opportunities for moms, facilitate support groups, and connect moms with grief counseling, as needed. MOM Cares also makes home visits to help prepare for the baby's homecoming.
MOM Cares aims to improve family engagement and support fro moms of NICU babies, as studies show that babies have a better chance of survival with regular contact form mothers. If moms don't feel supported, or are met with hostility and microaggressions and made to feel their voice doesn't matter, their likelihood to remain present throughout the NICU stay dwindles.
